The history of the bow dates back to thousands of years where ancient civilizations adorned their hair with bows in decorative styles. Throughout the ages the bow has been used as an adornment and at one stage held space for a love interest or to show whether a person was 'taken' 'interested or 'looking' 

In late-16th century France, ribbons and bows were popular among young men, primarily due to the lovelock hairstyle. The lovelock, a long plait draped over the chest, was tied with a bow or a ribbon near the end. Because it was worn over the heart, the lovelock signified the wearer’s romantic devotion to his partner. 

Symbolic of a promise or a token of remembrance, while it can look like a simple frivolous item of beauty the bow can take on a much deeper meaning, possibly known only to the wearer.
